Cameron Chapter on the Navajo Reservation teams with Sacred Power to Expand home Solar Energy Program

March 13, 2006

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Who knew Rayola J. Werito’s call to Sacred Power after reading an article about the company bringing electricity to homes on the Navajo Chapters of Ojo Encino and Torreon would lead to residents in the Cameron Arizona area being next in line to receive these hybrid solar power stations?

That phone call led to Cameron Navajo Chapter and Sacred Power collaborating to submit a grant to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  The collaboration paid off and by mid- summer 2006, Sacred Power will begin installing hybrid solar stations in 100 homes within the Cameron Navajo Chapter in Arizona funded by a $1.9 million UDSA grant.

Sacred Power Corporation is a Native American-owned Company headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  For the second time in less than two years, Sacred Power Corporation has been awarded funding to through USDA to provide electricity to homes on the Navajo Reservation.  David Melton, Laguna tribal member and Principal of Sacred Power Corporation stated, “In 2005, we installed fifty-two hybrid solar power stations on the Navajo Reservation.  For the first time ever, the children in these homes were able to do homework after the sun went down, and their parents were able to store food and medicine in the refrigeration units provided.  Sacred Power invested resources and time to ensure the solar systems met the goals of sustainability and user friendliness.  This new funding provided us the ability to expand the project and clearly says we met our goals. We will also partner with Arizona Public Service Company Energy Services (APSES) and the Propane Education Research Council (PERC).”

Rayola J. Werito, the Community Services Coordinator for Navajo Nation Cameron Chapter commented “I’m excited our community was able to partner with Sacred Power to get these solar system stations installed.  Using solar energy technology falls right in line with Indian people’s philosophy of protecting the environment.  When I read about Sacred Power in the paper and made the phone call inquiring about expanding the project to the Navajo Nation Cameron Chapter in Arizona, I didn’t think things would happen so quickly.”

Solar energy technology offers tremendous benefits for the United States by diversifying energy supplies, reducing dependence on imported fuels, improving air quality, and stimulating the economy by creating jobs in the manufacturing and installation of solar energy systems.  Agriculture Secretary, Mike Johanns, recently commented about the grant award to Sacred Power and other renewable energy award grantees “Increasing domestic energy production…helps to strengthen the economy of rural America and reduces our dependence on imported oil.  These funds will also help to promote energy efficiency by improving our existing electrical infrastructure.”

Odes Armijo-Caster, Sacred Power Principal, is thrilled about having another opportunity to bring electricity to more homes on the Navajo reservation.  “Producing energy in non-polluting ways and using it more efficiently is what the future has to be,” said Armijo-Caster.

Sacred Powers operates out of two locations; Corporate headquarters at 2401 12th St., NW, Suite 204-205, Albuquerque, NM 87104; the other is their manufacturing facility at 2109 Commercial NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107, 6 blocks to the east, which resides in a HUB Zone.
